Why an open door policy may not always be good for your building

Why an open door policy may not always be good for your building | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

Doors are typically left open in buildings to allow for easier access to people. However, the problem with propped doors is the large amount of energy being wasted by heat and conditioned air leaking out of these buildings. This wasted energy not only impacts building expenses, but also has a detrimental effect on the environment.

Windows and doors aid 5x4 Hayes Lane success

Windows and doors aid 5x4 Hayes Lane success | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

The motivation for the owner of the 5x4 Hayes Lane Project was to utilise a small, urban footprint of land to construct a liveable dwelling. Whilst maximising the use of the limited space, the building does not sacrifice functionality and an aesthetically grounded contemporary design. Because this project is experimental and innovative, all the designs, processes and materials are shared on the 5x4 website to benefit the entire construction industry.

One of the owner’s concerns was that the knowledge gained throughout the build process can be used as a vehicle to showcase, demonstrate and inform. The 5x4 Hayes Lane Project endeavours to do all this in an environmentally responsible manner, looking at the whole life cycle of the dwelling - from conception to decommission. The project has brought together various specialists in their respective fields to contribute to the success of achieving these goals.

Solving Problems with Window Coverings

Solving Problems with Window Coverings | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

Window covering professionals are constantly being asked to solve dilemmas in the home and come up with an appropriate window treatment.

Considerations such as house orientation, proximity to neighbours, size of windows and noise levels are all significant. Of course there are many varied solutions, but I have indicated what I believe to be the best options here.

Keep in mind that double glazed windows greatly contribute to the effectiveness of many window treatments, particularly when it comes to noise control and heat/cold transfer.

In Victoria, steps have been taken recently to give homes a star-based energy rating (similar to the ratings on major electrical appliances).

Aalta Screen Systems bringing stripes back into fashion for awnings

Aalta Screen Systems bringing stripes back into fashion for awnings | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

There was a time when awnings meant stripes in different colour combinations with khaki green and beige being one of the more popular choices in both residential and commercial segments.

The trend moved towards more sophisticated looks using neutral palettes of plain white, off-white, taupe, latte, cacao or even the simple and elegant charcoal. However, from a design perspective, plain whites, taupes and charcoals on awnings or sun shade systems do not suit all homes and commercial places. These places need a different finish on their awnings, something that will make them pop, even draw attention to the awning rather than divert the gaze away to other elements in the area.

A recent project completed for a home in the eastern suburbs of Sydney saw the installation of a bold blue and white striped BX260 folding arm awning, helping the homeowner match up their Mediterranean-look backyard with the stripes.

The ultimate stargazing window for those brave enough to use it

The ultimate stargazing window for those brave enough to use it | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

Gone are the days of craning your neck to look at the stars from your window, you can now have the luxury of sitting or lying back to look at the night sky.

But it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Argentinian architect Aldana Ferrer Garcia has created an extending window that allows you to be simultaneously inside and outside.

The “More Sky” windows fit into existing windows and can be extended out from the wall to create seated alcoves.

Garcia writes on her website the project “provides visual relief, access to sunlight and fresh air for small apartments” and is a response to “current needs in densely populated cities”.

Window hardware innovation solves new building code challenges

Window hardware innovation solves new building code challenges | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

Recent changes to window opening restrictions in the National Construction Code (NCC) have been celebrated as a safety commitment in the Building Code of Australia (BCA) for the benefit of all Australians while also lamented by some for the potential detriment to a building’s access to natural ventilation.

The new standard dictates that any unscreened awning window below 1.7 metres must have a restricted opening of 105mm – not excellent news for those who enjoyed the breeze rushing through their fully extended awning window or for those out of favour with the “look” and the translucency of flyscreens.

One option, which is also becoming increasingly popular for other reasons, is to specify bigger awning windows, because a larger operable window means a larger opening and therefore more access to natural ventilation.

Innovative Glass Material for a New Smart Window

Innovative Glass Material for a New Smart Window | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

A biomimetic smart window based on the eyes of moths could cut HVAC energy use by 40 per cent, slash cleaning costs and reduce glare in tall buildings, according to researchers from University College London.

The glass proposed for the windows features pyramid-like nanostructure engravings reminiscent of a moth’s eye. At 200 nanometres, these nanostructure are 100 times smaller than a human hair. Controlling the surface morphology at the nanoscale allows scientists to tailor how the glass interacts with liquids and light with high precision.

The latest fire and smoke reduction window systems for bushfire-prone areas

The latest fire and smoke reduction window systems for bushfire-prone areas | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

Australia is known for its dry heat, scorching sun and unparalleled track record for devastating bushfires. And while these instances are just part-and-parcel of living in Australia, a lot of the damage caused by these fires to property and buildings could have been avoided had certified fireproof and smoke reducing building products been used when they were constructed, and had best-practice design of buildings in bushfire-prone areas been followed.

One of the major hurdles facing designers of homes in bushfire prone areas is the perception that building to high Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL) is difficult and expensive, another is that our most common and low-cost building materials are not suited for these areas.

The most commonly specified windows in Australia for example are either standard aluminium or timber frames, both of which are highly combustible and encourage flames and smoke to spread at a fast rate in the case of a fire. Glass windows, if not properly treated, can also be a hazard in their own right as sudden rises in temperature can see glass crack, shatter and fracture from the severe stress.

Police tell West Australians to lock their doors

Police tell West Australians to lock their doors | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

A new advertising campaign launched today will remind West Australians to lock their doors and windows to ward off burglars.
It comes after a recent Police survey of offenders found 66 per cent admitted all their burglaries were through unlocked doors and windows.

Overall, 30 per cent of all reported home burglary and property thefts are through unlocked doors and windows.

“At this time of the year we see more of these crimes as people head to the beach, the car parks are full, your houses may be empty and we all occasionally forget to shut the window after letting the breeze in,” she said. “One third of home burglaries and other property theft, like valuables from cars, occur where doors and windows have been left unlocked or valuable items left in full view.

Tips to keep your house cool in scorching temperatures

Tips to keep your house cool in scorching temperatures | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

A cool change has brought a reprieve for large parts of southern Australia where temperatures soared above 40 degrees in recent days.

Energy auditor and sustainability educator Matt Ruffin said residents should take advantage of the drop in temperatures to ventilate their home and implement some cooling measures for the coming months.

"External window coverings will help you in summer and internal window coverings will help you in winter," he said. Mr Ruffin said keeping windows and doors closed through the day and erecting external window coverings would be the best measure to keep the heat out of a non air-conditioned house.

Specifying the right windows and doors for your building

Specifying the right windows and doors for your building | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

As the most fundamental, necessary features of any construction, doors and windows play a crucial role in determining the personality and environment of any building.

Australia’s climate plays a massive role in determining the doors and windows required to maintain a liveable, workable environment. Many products out there are unable to compete with Australia’s harsh conditions, and manufacturers often forgo quality and compliance with the Building Code of Australia, for cheap solutions. Unfortunately for designers and builders, they choose inferior systems that reflect negatively on their reputation.

For the love of the coloured front door

For the love of the coloured front door | Doors and Windows | Scoop.it

I always get excited when I see a bold coloured front door on a house because it says to me that through the other side is something impressive, something bold, and something not so ordinary.

For someone like me who lives and breathes interiors, difference is what we crave. It says to me that this home owner has an evolved sense of design and one that doesn’t take itself too seriously and that is exactly the type of house I want to walk through.

Not every house can pull off a coloured front door, mind you. It looks best on classical style homes and on houses painted in a block colour; blacks, white, grey or charcoal. This is my pick of houses for sale in Brisbane and Melbourne, all with beautiful bold coloured front doors and all filled with character beyond the entrance.
